Remembering Death
We prepare for many milestones in life—graduations, promotions and marriages—but often overlook the one certainty we will all face: death. Acknowledging this reality inspires us to strive for improvement. As Ibn Umar (ra) once said : “If you survive until the evening, do not expect to live until the morning; and if you survive until the morning, do not expect to live until the evening.”(Bukhari)
Today, we may mourn the loss of a close friend or relative, and tomorrow, it could be us. Regardless of where our journeys began, death is a destination we all share. The wise person is one who reflects on this eventuality and prepares for it. Rectifying their heart and soul for the day they meet their maker.
Allah says- And fear the day when you shall be brought back to Allah, and every soul will be paid in full for what it has earned. And they shall not be dealt with unjustly. (2:281)
Verily, the death from which you flee will surely meet you, then you will be sent back to (Allah), the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will tell you what you used to do. (62:8)
We work hard to build homes and amass wealth, yet we cannot take any of it with us, in the end there are no pockets in your burial cloth. The pleasures of this life deceive us, but as the Prophet Muhammad said: remember often the destroyer of pleasures (death). (Tirmidhi). thus reflecting and remembering death frequently is vital for the believer.
